MCA turns 62 amid an eventful celebration

The Star, Monday 28 February 2011

THE mood at the MCA 62nd anniversary celebration, which kicked off at 9am, in Wisma MCA, Kuala Lumpur yesterday was upbeat.
True to its celebration theme “1MCA, People First”, party president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek began the ceremony by launching six mobile service vehicles, all bearing registration numbers starting with MCA.

The mobile units would reach out to the poor and needy — providing services like health screening, public service and complaints, and consultation and applications.

This was followed by a two-hour ceremony at the San Choon Hall with programmes like hoisting the national and party flags, singing the national anthem, party songs, address by Dr Chua and secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, a cake-cutting ceremony, wushu performances, video clip presentation and dance and choir performances.

Dr Chua said party unity and love for the party was the best gift MCA members could give to the party on this joyous and meaningful occasion.
Party unity, he added, was for the party, Barisan Nasional, the country and the people’s future.
The event, attended by some 2,000 grassroots leaders and representatives from Chinese organisations, ended at noon.

GEORGE TOWN: The country’s tourism industry will suffer if the Penang Government does not take swift action to prevent accidents arising from watersports activities in Batu Ferringhi.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said seven beach accidents had reportedly occurred in the last three months with three people sustaining serious injuries. “I hope the state government will set up a proper system to ensure the safety of tourists on its beaches, especially in Batu Ferringhi.

“Beach activities are under the jurisdiction of the state and strict enforcement should be carried out,” she said after visiting Chinese national Zhu Li, 47, at the Penang Hospital yesterday. Zhu Li was taking photographs at the Batu Ferringhi beach when she was rammed by two Myanmar nationals on a water scooter on Saturday. She fractured her two femur bones and may be hospitalised for up to six months. Ng said enforcement was important to ensure all safety procedures were followed.

“Banning watersports activities is not the solution,” she said, referring to the state government’s temporary ban on such activities. She said the regulations should outline safety procedures, proper zones for watersports activities, requirements for those steering water craft and insurance procedures.
“We will try to help Zhu Li’s family by helping to extend their visas,” she said after talking to Zhu Li and her husband Zhao Yong Gang, 47. Ng said the doctor had informed her that they were unable to operate on Zhu Li’s legs yet as there was a compound fracture which was contaminated with sand and dirt.

Zhu Li and her daughter Zhao Xue, 20, were on their first trip to Penang to celebrate the Lunar New Year with her husband, who works in an electronics plant in Sungai Petani.

Meanwhile, state police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said the two Myanmar nationals, who were believed to be on holiday in Penang, have been remanded for two weeks under the Immigration Act for not possessing valid travelling documents

GEORGE TOWN: The MCA may have lost all its seats in Penang in the last general election but its leaders have not been idle, said Penang MCA deputy chairman Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun.

“We have continued to work and serve the people. For we know that through our hard work and efforts, we will win back Penang,” he said. Dr Loh also reminded state party leaders that it did not matter who amongst them would be chosen to contest in the next election, as what was important was a win for Barisan Nasional. Towards this end, he reminded the members to give support to leaders from component parties.

Dr Loh was speaking at the Bayan Baru MCA division Chinese New Year open house at the SRJK (C) Chung Shan in Bayan Lepas on Saturday night. Also present were Barisan Nasional co-ordinators Datuk Abdul Rahim Saibu (for Batu Maung constituency), Wong Mun Hoe (Pantai Jerejak), David Yim (Bayan Baru), Goh Kheng Sneah (Batu Uban), Loh Chye Teik (Komtar) and organising chairman Ooi Chuan Aik.
