RM90mil set aside to tackle diseases

GEORGE TOWN: A Cabinet committee will be set up to combat non-communicable diseases like cancer, high blood pressure and obesity among Malaysians.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the committee, involving 12 ministries, would outline policies to deal with issues related to these diseases.

Road to recovery: Liow speaking to a patient undergoing physiotheraphy before launching the RM25.8mil Klinik Kesihatan Bandar Baru Air Itam in George Town, Penang yesterday.

He said the committee, which was approved by the Cabinet last Friday, would be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“We will implement community empowerment programmes, in which village community development and security committee (JKKK) members will be appointed as health advocates in their respective places,” he said after opening the Bandar Baru Air Itam health clinic here yesterday.

Liow said RM90mil had been set aside for the programmes. He said four mobile clinics would be made available in Johor, Perak, Selangor and Pahang next year. “It is a good concept as mobile clinics can reach out to those in rural areas. If it is proven effective, we will provide mobile clinics in all the states,” he said.
There are currently 127 mobile clinics equipped with doctors, medical advisers and nurses in the country, most of which are in Sabah and Sarawak.

The Bandar Baru Air Itam health clinic, which cost RM25.8mil under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, was completed in March. The clinic offers outpatient, dental, emergency, pharmacy, lab, X-ray and rehabilitation services, and treatment for mother and child. It caters to over 100,000 residents in Air Itam, Paya Terubong, Rifle Range and Green Lane on the island. Since it opened in June, it has already received over 20,000 outpatients.

Najib names MCA chief to Penang Port Commission post

The Star, Tuesday 30 November 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has been appointed chairman of the Penang Port Commission and Penang Port Commission (Teluk Ewa) effective Nov 15.

The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement yesterday that Dr Chua’s one-year appointment until Nov 14 next year was to succeed Tan Cheng Liang, reported Bernama.

It said Dr Chua’s experience as a former cabinet minister and Johor state executive councillor would ensure the enhancement of the port commission’s functions as the supervisory body and facilitator for the development and expansion of the Penang Port.

“The government was sure that under Dr Chua’s leadership, the port’s performance would be enhanced and its status as the country’s major port could be maintained,” it added.

Later at an up close and personal dinner with his Facebook fans, Dr Chua thanked the Prime Minister for the appointment.

“He (Najib) did tell me to look into the port so that we can optimise it to be not just a cargo port but also a port for tourism especially for ocean liners to berth,” he told about 100 of his fans who attended the event.
He added that he would focus especially on the Tanjung Marina area which was not fully developed.
On whether the appointment would affect his work as the MCA president, Dr Chua said “I don’t think so because it’s not a full-time job anyway.” — Bernama
